Fellowship Application, Vivian J. Beamon, 1948
-
Description
-
Correspondence between Vivian Jones Beamon, William C. Haygood and Dorothy A. Elvidge, concerning her successful application for a fellowship. An award letter grants her 2,500 dollars for a twelve month period to work toward her Ph.D. in Education at New York University's Center for Human Relations Studies. Subsequent letters include her acceptance and instructions from the Fund regarding the payment schedule and the transfer of the grant's administration to Mr. Nathan W. Levin due to the Funds closure. Documents include her plan of work, which focused on how schools can provide for the basic human needs of underprivileged children. The file contains numerous strong confidential letters of reference from her superiors and colleagues, including Dr. Claude V. Courter, Superintendent of Cincinnati Schools, and Dr. Alice Keliher of New York University, who praise her leadership and her work in intercultural education. Also included is a photograph of Beamon, academic transcripts from several universities, and a payment voucher for the first installment of her grant.
