Description
-
Correspondence between sculptor Richmond Barthé, Julius Rosenwald Fund staff including Edwin R. Embree and William C. Haygood, and other figures such as Henry Allen Moe of the Guggenheim Foundation, concerning Barthé's multiple fellowships and his recommendations of other artists. Documents show Barthé was awarded an initial fellowship of 1,200 dollars in December 1930 to establish a studio, followed by several smaller grants through 1932. Correspondence from 1946 shows Barthé recommending other artists, including William Artis and John Rhoden, for fellowships. The file contains Barthé's 1930 application, internal memos, and accounting sheets detailing the awards. A post fellowship review form filled out by Barthé states the grant enabled him to study at the Art Students League and led to the Whitney Museum of American Art purchasing three of his works for their permanent collection. Also included are extensive biographical summaries listing his many awards and commissions, such as the bust of Booker T. Washington for the Hall of Fame, and a long list of exhibitions. The file contains numerous newspaper clippings, articles, and promotional materials from the 1930s and 1940s documenting his career, along with photographs of his sculptures.
