Fellowship Application, Das K. Barnett, 1945-1948
-
Description
-
Correspondence between Das Kelley Barnett, Will W. Alexander, and the Julius Rosenwald Fund staff, including William C. Haygood and Dorothy A. Elvidge, concerning Barnett's application for and acceptance of a 2,500 dollars fellowship in 1946. The purpose of the grant was to write a book on the social responsibilities of the Southern Baptist Church, titled Preface to Transition. The letters also document a revised study plan and payment schedule, as well as a request from Barnett for the Fund to support the journal Christian Frontiers, which he edited; this request was denied based on Fund policy. A final letter from Barnett in 1948 indicates the book is still in progress. Documents include Barnett's detailed plan of work, confidential letters of reference from scholars at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Yale Divinity School, and the University of North Carolina, including Dr. Harold W. Tribble and Dr. Rupert E. Vance. The file also contains a photograph of Barnett, numerous payment vouchers, and a prospectus and a full issue of the journal Christian Frontiers.
