A press release from the American Academy and National Institute of Arts and Letters on May 8, announcing the 15 recipients of the annual 1000 dollars arts and letters grants to artists, composers, and writers who were not members of the organization, and it stated that a formal presentation of the awards would be made on May 22. The six artists awarded include Mr. Peter Blume, Mrs. Dorothea Greenbaum, Mr. Joseph Hirsch, Ms. Victoria Hutson Huntley, Mr. Mitchell Jamieson, and Mr. Carl L. Schmitz. The six writers include Mr. Nelson Algren, Ms. Eleanor Clark, Mr. Lloyd Frankenberg, Mr. Robert Lowell, Mrs. Elizabeth Parsons, and Mr. James Still. The three composers include Mr. Ulysses Kay, Mr. Alexel Haieff, and Mr. Normand Lockwood.
