An application from Ralph Waldo Ellison for a fellowship in Writing. Mr. Ellison was a Freelance writer at the time of this application. His plan of work was to write a full length novel, intended as an imaginative probing of the kind of democratic relationship necessary for a highly conscious Negro to function with White men and to exercise the fullest potential of his humanity at the same time. The grant was sought from September 1944 through September 1945. Also included is a list of works Mr. Ellison had published from 1937 through 1945.
