-
Description
-
An application from Ms. Alice Elizabeth Catlett for a fellowship in painting and sculpture. Ms. Catlett was an administrative assistant and art instructor at the Carver School in New York City at the time, and her plan of work was to produce a series of lithographs, paintings, and sculptures on the role of the Negro woman in the fight for democratic rights in American history. The work was intended for exhibition in Southern colleges, with some pieces to be distributed to schools by the Rosenwald Fund. The grant was requested from June 1945 through June 1946. The file also includes a document listing awards received, collections made, and exhibitions in which Ms. Catlett participated from 1935 through 1944.
