The documents contain fellowship applications from Eric Williams dated 1940, 1942, and 1947. He was awarded 2,000 dollars in 1940 to study the rise of capitalism in Europe and America, as well as the Institution of slavery, for a duration of nine months. He reapplied in 1942 and was granted 1,800 dollars for A general study on The Caribbean and the Crisis of Democracy, a technical study on the Caribbean sugar industry. In 1947, he reapplied for a one-year grant, which was to begin in May. To collect documents, similar to Elizabeth Donnan s monumental work on the slave tracie, illustrative of British West Indian life and culture, in 2 volumes, Vol. I, 1492 to 1783, Vol. II, 1783-1946, but was not granted. The chosen field was History. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded to the applicant for the two years, and two handwritten notes evaluating the applicant.
