The documents include fellowship applications from Dorothy Gwendolyn Williams for 1942, 1944, and 1945. Though the applicant was not given a grant in 1942 to work out at least certain aspects of a practical, forward-looking program for cooperation among research libraries interested in the field of materials by and about the Negro, in 1944, the applicant was granted 1,500 dollars, for thirteen months beginning in July to work towards Ph.D. at the University of Chicago under Professor H. J. Cadbury to formulate constructively the contribution which library service may make to a total program or adult education for Negroes in the South in the post-war world. This grant was renewed in 1945 for one year, starting in August, to continue the above plan of work. He was given 1,800 dollars, and the chosen field was Library Science. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grant awarded to the applicant for the two years, and three handwritten notes, evaluating the applicant for each application.
