The documents contain a 1944 and 1947 application from James Theodore Ward, a freelance writer. In 1944, applied for a one-year grant beginning in May to complete the first draft of the Fellowship Play and other works. Reapplied in 1947, for a one-year grant to consult documents of Frederick Douglass at the Library of Congress pertaining to the life of John Brown, and on the basis of that research, write a play about the latter. Included are a handwritten evaluative note assigning a grade of B and a brief written assessment of the application.
