The documents contain a 1939 application from Dan Rutledge Vining, an Instructor of Statistics and Economics at, University of Arkansas. The applicant was given 1,800 dollars in 1939, and another 1800 dollars in 1940 as a renewal, for an empirical study of the economic organization of a southern region, of the nature and sources of the fluctuation of employment and income in this region, and other works towards Ph. D. at the University of Chicago under Professor F. H. Knight and Dr. Oscar Lange. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded, as well as two handwritten evaluative notes on the application. One assigns a grade of A, and they contain a brief written assessment of the applications.
