The documents include 1939 and 1945 applications from Lorenzo Dow Turner. The applicant was awarded 3,100 dollars in 1939 to study the sounds, syntax, inflections, intonation, and vocabulary of Negro speech in Bahia and Pernambuco, Brazil, with a view to determining the nature, extent, and significance of West African survivals in this speech. Reapplied in 1945 and was awarded, was awarded 2,500 dollars in 1939 to complete and publish three volumes of Afro Brazilian folk material. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded, as well as two evaluative notes that both assign a grade of A and contain written assessments on the applications.
