The documents include 1942 and 1947 applications from James Allen Tower, an associate professor of Geography. The applicant applied in 1942 for a grant to spend the good weather months of the academic year 1942 43 doing fieldwork in the 67 counties of Alabama and the bad weather months in the State Archives, the Library of Congress, and my office, collecting data and writing a Geography of Alabama. Reapplied in 1947, and was awarded 1,600 dollars to complete the statistical analysis and mapping of census data and other works. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded, along with handwritten evaluative notes on the application. One assigns a grade of A, the other an A minus, and both include brief written assessments on the application.
