An application from Thomas Carlyle Tillery in 1946, requesting a one year grant beginning in September to write a novel dealing with the social effects of predominantly poor soil and racial prejudices on the people of the piney woods section of Louisiana at the University of Alabama under the supervision of Professor Hudson Strode. Included is a handwritten evaluative note on the application. It assigns a grade of B plus and includes a brief written assessment, which mentions the phrase “good testimony.” Other portions of the note are present but are not fully legible.
