Application from Wendell Wayne Smiley

Description
-
An application from Wendell Wayne Smiley, requesting a grant beginning July 1943. The plan of work was to do a study to trace the development of libraries in North Carolina from the earliest period of the state down to the present, and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at the University of North Carolina under the supervision of Dr. Edgar W. Knight. This application was submitted in 1943, and the chosen field is Library Science. Included is a handwritten note: Strong letter from Destler. Looks like a very performatory subject - and like his real desire is simply for a PhD [illegible].
