Description
An application from Daniel Thomas Skinner, requesting a grant beginning June 1942. The plan of work was to study the Louisiana Gombo Dialect and the Negroes who speak it, and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at Harvard University under Professor J.M. Ford. Mr. Skinner reapplied for another grant beginning September 1947 towards studying the French Canadian Poet-Statesman Louis Frechette, while under Dr. Marcel Frangon.Mr. Skinner reapplied for another grant beginning September 1948 towards doing field work at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. These applications were submitted in 1942, 1947, and 1948, and the chosen fields are Linguistics and Language and Literature. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grant awarded to Mr. Skinner in 1947, as well as handwritten notes: good record - but not [illegible] I wasn't for him last year and I'm not now, Brilliant student. IBK and Magna Cum Laude at Harvard. Strong letters. He is very young [illegible], and An unusually brilliant young man. I rated him A three years ago and put him there now [illegible].
