An application from Thomas Sancton, requesting a grant beginning May 1943. The plan of work was to travel through Deep South states studying basis of race tension and attempting to combat riot rumors at their source, and to publish material attempting to movie White Southerners to a humanitarian approach toward the race problem. Mr. Sancton reapplied for another grant beginning March 1947 towards completing a study of Southern culture and the influence of Southern patterns upon the nation. These applications were submitted in 1943 and 1947, and the chosen field is Creative Writing. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grant awarded to Mr. Sancton across 1943, 1945, and 1947, as well as a record of professional career and handwritten notes: Unquestionably an able man illegible] and No doubt about this man at all.
