An application from Jack Alvin Rhodes, requesting a grant beginning September 1943. The plan of work was to obtain a Master's degree in Political Science at either the University of Chicago or the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Rhodes reapplied for another grant beginning September 1944 towards improving quality of legislation and contributing to the organization of State Legislative Research Councils in states where such councils did not exist, and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at either Harvard University or at the University of Chicago to work under Leonard White. Mr. Rhodes reapplied for another grant beginning September 1946 towards working at Harvard University under the supervision of Dr. Pendleton Herring. Mr. Rhodes reapplied for another grant beginning September 1947 towards writing a book on the subject of The American State Legislature - special reference to legislative methods and techniques in Southern states - while working under the supervision of Mr. Merle Fainsod. These applications were submitted across 1943 through 1947, and the chosen fields are Political Science and Public Administration. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grant awarded to Mr. Rhodes in 1944, as well as handwritten notes: A good man. He doesn't seem to me a [illegible], Not quite top testimony 'a bit visionary + pompous' [illegible], and Nothing to take hold of. Immature. No scholarly references [illegible].
