An application from Ellene Ransom, requesting a grant towards making a definitive study of Utopian fiction in America [particularly before 1900], and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at Vanderbilt University under Mr. Richmond C. Beatty. This application was submitted in 1940, and the chosen field is American Literature. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grant awarded to Ms. Ransom in 1940, as well as a handwritten note: Very over age. Phi Beta Kappa - but that was a long time ago [illegible].
