An application from Benjamin Arthur Quarles, requesting a grant towards doing a full length study of Frederick Douglass under the supervision of the Department of United States History at the University of Wisconsin, and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at the University of Wisconsin. This application was submitted in 1937, and the chosen field is History. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded to Mr. Quarles in 1937 and 1945, as well as a record of professional career and a handwritten note: He had a fellowship a year ago. i am loath to keep repeating on these grants [illegible].
