Record of Fellowships Granted, Written Addendum, Fellowship Application, and Fellowship Reappointment from Clinton Forrest Oliver
Description
An application from Clinton Forrest Oliver, requesting a two-year grant beginning September 1941. The plan of work was to study the creative and philosophical expression of the Negro in his contribution to America's culture - reflecting on tthe attempts to meet problems arising out of the Emancipation, Reconstruction, and contemporary social conditions - and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at Harvard University. Mr. Oliver reapplied for another grant towards continuing the study under Professor Perry Miller, and he reapplied for another grant beginning July 1943 towards studying the Negro novel [covering about one hundred years of Negro fiction from the 1830s and 1840s] through working in the libraries at Howard University and Fisk University and the Schomburg Collection in New York City. Mr. Oliver reapplied for another five-month grant towards completing a thesis on American Negro Literature An Interpretive Study in Genre and Ideas, while still researching at James Weldon Johnson Collection of Yale University and at the Negro Collection of Howard University Library. These applications were submitted in 1941 through 1943, and 1948, and the chosen field is English Language and Literature. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded to Mr. Oliver across 1941, 1942, and 1944, as well as handwritten notes: Good record. But if we carry him now, will have to do it for at least one more year. Won't he be drafted anyway and A queer, tempremental fellow. But maybe something of a genius [illegible].
