Record of Fellowships Granted, Written Addendum, Letter of Reappointment, and Fellowship Application from Charles Harold Nichols, Jr.
Description
An application from Charles Harold Nichols, Jr., requesting a grant beginning September 1943. The plan of work was to study the influence of the Negro poets since Dunbar on the whole pattern of American literature, and to obtain a Master of Arts degree under the supervision of either Mr. Avery O. Craven at the University of Chicago, or Mr. Oscar Cargill at the New York University. Mr. Nichols reapplied for another grant beginning September 1944 towards publishing an anthology of slave narratives [after a year of graduate study in American history and Amrican literature] and obtaining a Master of Arts degree at the University of Chicago under Dr. Avery O. Craven. Mr. Nichols reapplied for another grant beginning September 1945 towards obtaining a Ph.D. degree at Brown University under the supervision of Professors Randall Stewart and James B. Hedges; as well as reapplied for another grant beginning September 1946. These applications were submitted in 1943 through 1946, and the chosen field is English Language and Literature. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded to Mr. Nichols across 1945 and 1946, as well as handwritten notes: No scholarly references. No evidence of top talent [illegible], We've turned this man down before. But his work this year at Brown [illegible] high praise from his professors [illegible], and Top testimony. I guess we'll have to pass him. Shall we hold all single men to 1,500 [rather than $1,600 [illegible].
