Title
Application from Jeter Allen Isely
Description
Application from Jeter Allen Isely, requesting an eighteen-month grant towards writing a doctoral dissertation on the Populist Movement in North Carolina, especially the factors that caused the revolt and the eventual failure to overthrow the one-party governmental machine, and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at Princeton University under Professor C.R. Hall. Mr. Isely reapplied for another one-year grant towards completing a thesis, "Horace Greeley and Social Democracy, 1854-1860," contrasting the pre-Civil War popular desires for free soil and free labor with the actual Reconstruction attainments. Also included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded to Mr. Isely, and a professional record and handwritten notes.
