An application from James Langston Hughes, requesting a one-year grant in June 1941 to write a series of one-act plays with small casts and simple sets suitable for production by Negro high schools and colleges and amateur groups. Mr. Hughes requested another one-year grant, beginning June 1942, to complete the second volume of his autobiography, covering the experiences of colored people in Haiti, Soviet Asia, China, Japan, and Spain during the Civil War, while working with Dr. Bond. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grant awarded to Mr. Hughes, as well as a record of professional career and a handwritten note that evaluates the application.
