An application from James Welfred Holmes, requesting a one-year grant in September 1943 to investigate the prose writings of John Greenleaf Whittier during the period 1830-1860, and to obtain a Ph.D. degree at the University of Pittsburgh under the supervision of Dr. H.W. Schoenberger. Mr. Holmes requested another one-year grant beginning June 1944. Included is a memorandum summarizing the 1943 grant awarded to Mr. Holmes, and a handwritten note.
