An application from Naomi Mills Garrett, requesting a one-year grant in 1944 to do a thesis on Main Currents in Haitian Literature and to obtain a Ph.D. degree in Romance Languages at Columbia University under Dr. Horatio Smith. Ms. Garrett reapplied for another one-year grant, beginning in September 1945, towards a Ph.D. degree in French under the supervision of Professor Jean-Albert Bede. Included is a memorandum summarizing the grant awarded to Ms. Garrett in 1944, as well as handwritten notes regarding the applications.
