An application from Arna Wendell Bontemps, requesting a grant towards gathering background material for books in the children's field, and to complete the research and finish writing a broad-canvass historical novel. Mr. Bontemps reapplied for another 1-year grant towards obtaining a Master of Arts degree in the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago. These applications were submitted in 1938 and 1942, and the chosen fields are Creative Writing and Library Science. Also included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded to Mr. Bontemps across 1938, 1942, and 1943, as well as his record of professional career and handwritten note: "We gave this man a full year free for study + writing [illegible]".
