Applications from Fannin Saffore Belcher, Jr., requesting a 2-year grant to concentrate upon the technical phases of playwriting, play directing, production, and stage lighting which would develop those skills necessary in the promotion of artistic standards in Negro drama, and in the continuation of special experiments in make-up for the Negro Little Theatre. The plan of work was to obtain a Ph.D. through Yale University. These applications were submitted in 1938 and 1939, and the chosen field is Drama. Also included is a memorandum summarizing the grants awarded to Mr. Belcher across 1938 and 1939, as well as his record of professional career and handwritten notes: "Very good scholastic record [illegible]", "Good letters from his professor at Yale [illegible]", and "[illegible] We gave it to Dean [illegible]".
