In 1946, she was given 2000 dollars, a one-year grant beginning in June, to write a book based on three years experience among a racially and culturally mixed group imprisoned in the Philippines by the Japanese. This was towards a Ph. D. degree at the University of North Carolina under the supervision of Dr. Howard W. Odum. She reapplied in 1947 to prepare for publication a study of the changes in class structure which occurred within a racially mixed society imprisoned for three years by the Japanese in the Philippines. She may have been granted 1,000 dollars, as seen on the application, but this amount does not appear on the Memorandum included. Also contained are two handwritten notes, evaluating the applications.
