Fellowship Application of John Beauregard Johnson An application from John Beauregard Johnson, Jr. for a fellowship in Medicine. Mr. Johnson was a Part time Instrructor in Piano at the time, so he sought further training as a Hospital Pathologist (with some teaching duties), and he chose Pathology as his course of study. The training would be under the supervision of Dr. Howard T. Karsner at Western Reserve University. This application was submitted on March 20, 1936. Also included is Mr. Johnsons medical record, as well as a handwritten essay which acknowledged the problems in Pathology and how more skilled practitioners would be needed to further the field.

Mr. Jenkins expressed his desire to continue his studies in Public Health with an accredited post graduate course at Post Graduate Hospital, New York City. So he rejected Dr. Bousfields offer for the Public health appointment at Tuskegee, Alabama.

Mr. Bousfield mentioned that he would relay poissible placements to Dr. Jenkins. He also recalled that the Julius Rosenwald Fund (in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service) carried on widespread Syphilis demonstration in 6 Southern states in 1930. This important work would soon be done in neighboring counties, as well as a midwifery program by the State of Alabama and the Macon County Health Department. Mr. Bousfield relayed that the Julius Rosenwald Fund had already guaranteed a 3 year extension of the work, so he was willing to offer Dr. Jenkins a position given the nature of the work.

Mr. Oppenheimer mentioned he had received a letter from M.L. Jackson of Valdosta, Georgia. Dr. Moses recommended Floarda Howard for a scholarship from Rosenwald Fund. He mentioned that Dr. Howard needed 2 more years of Surgical training to qualify for the American Board Surgery, and he regarded Dr. Howard as one of excellent training, very intelligent and ambitious, and even a credit to the Negro people. Dr. Moses also recalled that Dr. Howards wife was a physician that had some training under his direction.
